Origins

Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1976, Chuma Maweni's journey into ceramics began on the muddy riverbanks of the Eastern Cape. As a child, he sculpted small bulls and cows from clay, unknowingly laying the foundation for his future career. Amidst the social upheaval of anti-Apartheid riots in the 1980s, Maweni's family relocated to KwaPayne village in rural Transkei, where he continued to nurture his artistic inclinations.

Maweni's formal education in ceramics began at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in ceramic design in 2002. This academic experience not only honed his skills but also exposed him to a diverse, multiracial environment that broadened his perspective.

Design Ethos

Maweni's work is a masterful blend of traditional African aesthetics and contemporary design. His distinctive wheel-thrown vessels and furniture are a modern interpretation of traditional Nguni ceramics. Working from his studio in Cape Town, Maweni crafts each piece with meticulous precision, creating an exceptional sense of balance and form.

The artist draws inspiration from the prevalence of circular forms in traditional African design. He cites examples such as rural rondavels with central supporting pillars (intsika), ukhamba pots used for drinking traditional beer, and kraal enclosures for livestock. These influences are evident in his work, which often features concave and convex volumes with varied shapes, scales, and surface patterns.

Maweni's creative process is deeply rooted in the rhythmic nature of wheel-throwing. He describes the wheel as his master, requiring constant negotiation and communication. This process demands complete focus, with the movement of his hands and the steady pressure of his foot on the pedal working in perfect harmony.
